Tenerife is the island of eternal spring: mild temperatures almost all year and plenty of sun. But that's exactly why packing hides two traps: altitude — on Mount Teide it's cold and can snow while you're sunbathing on the beach — and strong sun in every season. The rule is always the same: dress in layers, protect yourself from the sun and pack something warm, even in summer. Here's the full checklist: what to always bring, what changes month by month and how much you need for a week.
The golden rule: dress in layers
In a single day in Tenerife you can go from the 26 °C of a southern beach to the few degrees (with wind) at Teide altitude. That's why the keyword is "layers": t-shirt + sweatshirt + light jacket you take off and put back on. It works all year and saves you from both sweating and freezing.
The basic case (all year)
- Light, summery clothing: t-shirts, shorts, a few comfortable pieces for the evening.
- Swimwear: in Tenerife you can swim even in winter, at least in the south.
- High sun protection (SPF 50), aftersun, a hat and sunglasses: the sun is strong in every season.
- Comfortable walking shoes (the towns and villages are explored on foot).
- A sweatshirt or light jacket for the evenings and for altitude, even in summer.
- A reusable water bottle and a power bank.
- A plug adapter only if you arrive from outside Europe (Spain uses type C/F sockets, 230V).
Beach and sea
- Swimwear, towel and flip-flops.
- Water shoes: very useful on pebble or lava beaches and in the natural pools, where the rock is sharp and slippery.
- Water-resistant cream and aftersun.
- Mask and snorkel if you like snorkelling.
For the Teide and hikes
If you're planning the volcano or the trails, you need extra items — and forgetting them is the most common mistake:
- Warm layers (fleece or jacket) even in summer: at altitude it's cold and often windy.
- Closed or hiking shoes, not just flip-flops.
- A light windproof and waterproof jacket.
- Extra sun protection: at altitude the sun is more intense.
- In winter: a warm jacket, gloves and a hat — there can be snow on the Teide.
How the climb works (cable car, summit permit) is in the guide on how to climb Teide.
What changes month by month
| Period | Typical temperature | In the case |
| Summer (Jun–Sep) | 24–29 °C, warm and dry | Light clothes, plenty of sun protection, a light layer for evenings and altitude |
| Winter (Dec–Mar) | 18–22 °C in the south, cooler in the north | Spring clothes + swimwear (swimming in the south), a jumper/jacket for evenings, the north and the Teide, a rain jacket for the north |
| Spring/autumn (Apr–May, Oct–Nov) | 20–25 °C | In-between: layers, a light jacket, sun protection |

North or south: the packing changes too
Where you stay affects what you pack. The south is warmer, drier and sunnier — beach clothes and sun protection. The north is cooler, more humid and cloudier — add a rain jacket and an extra sweatshirt. If you're still deciding on a base, there's the guide on north or south Tenerife.
For a week: how much to bring
For a week a well-packed cabin bag is plenty: the island is casual, you don't need anything smart, and there's no shortage of laundries. Better a few versatile pieces to layer than a full suitcase. Go for quick-drying fabrics — handy after the beach, the pool or a walk.
What NOT to pack
- Heavy coats (unless the Teide in mid-winter).
- Too many smart clothes: Tenerife is informal.
- Huge sunscreen supplies: bring some for the first days, buy the rest on the island.
- The big umbrella: it rains very little in the south, and a rain jacket is enough for the north.
Practical bits not to forget
- A valid ID (ID card or passport depending on your nationality) and travel insurance or a European health card.
- Personal medicines and a small kit (plasters, aftersun, bite relief).
- A digital copy of your documents on your phone.
- A plug adapter if you arrive from outside Europe.
Once the case is packed
The best part comes next: beaches, the Teide, excursions and restaurants. Many of the island's paid activities have discounts for Tenerife Premium Card holders, with conditions that vary from partner to partner — worth keeping in mind when you plan what to do, but a thought for when the case is already closed.
In short
For Tenerife dress in layers and never forget three things: swimwear (yes, in winter too), high sun protection and something warm for the evening and for the Teide. Adapt the rest to the season and the coast — lighter in the south, an extra rain jacket in the north. With a well-thought-out cabin bag you have everything you need for a week on the island of eternal spring.
