Masca is one of the most spectacular villages in Tenerife: a handful of houses clinging to a ridge in the heart of the Teno mountains, at around 750 metres, suspended above a deep gorge. It's one of the most photographed places on the island, and it offers two very different experiences: visiting the village with its viewpoints (easy and open to everyone) and the famous Barranco de Masca trail, which descends the gorge to the sea (demanding and access-regulated). Here's what to know and, above all, how to get there — because the rules have changed.
The village of Masca
The village itself is small: a few stone houses, a little church, a couple of restaurants and several viewpoints taking in the gorge that drops towards the ocean, with the sharp profiles of the Teno mountains all around. A few hours are enough to enjoy it, between a stroll and a stop with a view. For that alone — the village and its panoramas — Masca is worth the trip, even without doing the trail.
How to get there (note: the rules have changed)
This is the most important part. Masca is reached by the narrow, winding TF-436 mountain road, but since late 2025 access has been reorganised, especially for those wanting to do the Barranco: you're not allowed to reach the trailhead by private vehicle. The official solution is to come from Santiago del Teide on the TITSA bus, line 355 (about 20 minutes to Masca). Parking in the hamlet is in any case very limited. As these are recent rules and subject to updates, it's always worth checking the current conditions before setting off. For mountain driving and choosing a car there's the guide on car hire in Tenerife.
The Barranco de Masca trail
The trail that crosses the gorge to the coast is one of Tenerife's most famous hikes, but it's no easy stroll: the route is officially classed as high difficulty, is about 5 km long and takes about 4 hours downhill, with a descent of around 750 metres. The ground is uneven, with steps, ramps and sections where you can slip. Access is strictly regulated:
- Compulsory booking: you need an entry ticket with a date and time.
- Compulsory transport: to reach the trailhead you must come from Santiago del Teide on TITSA line 355; you're not allowed to access the route by private vehicle.
- Compulsory helmet: it's provided by the organisation and must be returned at the end.
- Compulsory hiking footwear: you need closed mountain, trail or trekking shoes; sandals and ordinary sneakers are not accepted.
- Water: bring at least 1.5 litres per person, as there are no drinking-water points along the route.
- Return by sea: in the currently available mode the route is downhill with a boat exit from the Masca cove; the boat ticket is compulsory and booked separately.
Watch the sea conditions: the pier can close suddenly for safety and, if it does, anyone on the route has to walk back up to Masca — one more reason to tackle it only if you're in good physical shape. It's not a hike to improvise: always follow the staff's instructions and check the current status on the official Camino del Barranco de Masca website before setting off. When to go and how to plan it
Masca is up in the mountains, in the north-west: the weather can change fast and the village can be cooler or cloudier than the coast, so check the local forecast. Many pair it with other stops in the Teno area or with nearby Los Gigantes. A useful note for those doing the trail: after arriving by boat in Los Gigantes, the transfer up to Santiago del Teide isn't included — you can use TITSA lines 325 or 462. Where to eat
In the village there are a few small restaurants with Canarian cooking and views over the gorge: ideal for a break after the walk or before heading off again. A practical note: for restaurants and partner activities the Tenerife Premium Card can give access to discounts at participating partners — check the conditions and availability case by case.
In short
Masca is the most spectacular image of mountain Tenerife: a tiny village suspended above a gorge, among the Teno mountains. You can stick to the village and its panoramas — already extraordinary — or take on the gorge trail, remembering that it's now classed as high difficulty and requires booking, a helmet, hiking footwear and good fitness. And for the trail the most important rule applies: you don't drive in — you arrive by bus from the Santiago del Teide area.
